Meta faces lawsuit over WhatsApp privacy claims

A group of users from Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico, and South Africa has filed a class-action lawsuit against Meta Platforms in a federal court in San Francisco. The plaintiffs allege that Meta misled users by claiming WhatsApp provides complete privacy while allegedly being able to access message content.

Meta has denied the allegations. Company spokesperson Andy Stone called the lawsuit meritless and said claims that Meta can read WhatsApp messages are "categorically false and absurd." The company maintains that WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, meaning only the sender and recipient can read message contents.

No court has determined that WhatsApp violated users' privacy. The case is currently pending, and the allegations remain the plaintiffs' claims.
