Phone scams | Scammers call pensioners with promises of "gifts"
Phone scammers have started using the pretext of "gifts for the International Day of Older Persons" to target pensioners and veterans.
They first ask for an Individual Identification Number (IIN), then trick victims into revealing SMS and confirmation codes, which can allow access to financial transactions.
To help protect elderly relatives, it is useful to block calls from unknown numbers, verify suspicious calls through official contact details, and use services such as Trusted Contact in Kaspi.kz.
A trusted contact receives a notification if an elderly person is about to make a suspicious transaction and can approve or reject it within 24 hours.
The key rule remains the same: never share your IIN, passwords, or SMS codes over the phone.
