Between 2022 and 2025, 49 Kazakhstani citizens who had fallen victim to fraudulent overseas job offers were brought back home from Myanmar.
According to Kazakhstan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the victims were promised well-paid jobs abroad. Upon arrival, however, they were held in scam centers and forced to participate in fraudulent schemes.
Their return was made possible through the joint efforts of Kazakh diplomats, the authorities of other countries, and international organizations.
In 2025 alone, 20 people were repatriated to Kazakhstan. The country also assisted in the release of citizens of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan who had found themselves in similar situations.
As of May 2026, another five Kazakhstani citizens had been safely returned. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the number of such cases is gradually declining thanks to preventive measures by government agencies and increased public awareness of the risks associated with fraudulent overseas employment offers.
Experts advise job seekers to carefully verify employers and be cautious of offers promising high salaries without experience, paid travel expenses, and pressure to make quick decisions.
