China has carried out death sentences against 11 members of the Ming family, one of the most influential criminal syndicates operating in Myanmar. They were convicted of running large-scale telecom fraud, illegal online gambling, murder, kidnapping and unlawful detention.
According to the BBC, the criminal network generated more than 10 billion yuan (around US$1.4 billion) between 2015 and 2023. Its main sources of income included online scams, illegal casinos and prostitution. Victims were abducted and forced to work in scam compounds.
The case has become one of the most significant prosecutions in the joint crackdown by China and Myanmar on cross-border cybercrime. Chinese authorities have intensified efforts against scam compounds operating along the Myanmar border.
